A nominal sentence often appears as the form of “A,B也。”
This sentence means: A is B.
Ex 1
百里奚,虞人也。 Băi lǐ xī ,yú rén yě 。 | 百里奚:[N]a name 虞:[A]a name of a country |
百里奚is a person who came from虞. |
Ex 2
叔齊,賢人也。 shú qí ,xián rén yě 。 | 叔齊:[N]a Name 賢人:[N] worthy |
叔齊is a worthy. |
It is a very common sentence in classical Chinese. Sometimes “也yě” can be replaced by other words, like “矣yǐ”, or can be omitted.
